For the construction of chopped walls from logs, the most resistant to decay is durable wood, which is well processed in different directions. Conifers of wood are best suited for this role. The thickness of the logs is selected in the range between 220 and 270 mm, based on the ambient temperature
Depending on which the foundation is poured, the methodology for constructing chopped log walls is determined.
For the foundation of the columnar type, it is necessary to provide the same and balanced distribution of wall weight to the foundation. For this purpose, on top of waterproofing, all pillars are covered with fragments of boards with a layer of 50 – 75 mm. The lower crown of the log house is built from the most durable and thick wood and, for a columnar foundation, is always fastened with a slanting lock. It is important to remember that the joints between logs should be located on top of the foundation pillars.
For the foundation of the tape type, saturated with a resin of 50 mm boards are placed on three-layer waterproofing from roofing material. The lower crown of the log house is located on top of these boards.
Before laying in logs, from the lower part, special grooves are cut out to ensure the largest density of horizontal laying. Play should be at least 120 mm in depth. The corners of the lined logs are firmly fastened. If in the future it is planned to refine the finishing materials or insulate, the remaining logs sticking out in the corners are cut so that they form an even angle. If it is planned to leave the external walls without finishing, then the remains are not completely cut (this, to some extent, ensures log saving).
I would like to note that the chopped log walls themselves and without decoration have a very attractive classic look. At the same time, it is important to select and expand the logs so that the diameter of all logs is as the same as possible. If, nevertheless, the wall is planned to be decorated with finishing materials, then there is no need to wrap the logs.
When designing chopped log walls, it is important to follow certain principles:
1. The outer walls should be tuned to one kant, and in the internal two kants.
2. Vertical spikes must necessarily fasten the wood together throughout the wall. The location of the vertical spikes should be in the range from 150 to 200 mm from the openings in a checkerboard pattern.
3. Between the logs it is necessary to lay out a sufficient layer of package, so that it goes outside the edges of the logs on both sides. After the wall is designed, the edges of the pack are driven into the gaps between the logs (heated walls). Over time, Paklya settles, so after one or two years it is necessary to make a repeated “hemp” T. e. Drive the additional volume of packs into the gaps. This will increase the sound insulation of the house and reduce heat loss on cold days.
